Pain Therapy

The novel treatment method with low-frequency ultrasound was developed especially for pain treatment on muscles, tendons and joints. Special training for the therapist is not necessary. Under professional guidance and in case of suitable indication the treatment can also be performed at home by the patient, a family member or other persons.

Indications
Based on available studies, collected experience and literature, low-frequency therapeutic ultrasound is especially suitable for the following:
• muscular pain syndrome (e.g. myofascial trigger points, myosclerosis)
• arthrosis of all stages
• enthesiopathies (e.g. tennis elbow, golfer's elbow)
• local bone pain (e.g. calcaneal spur, coccygodynia)

The enumeration corresponds more or less with the ranking of expected effectiveness based on present experience. The muscular pain syndrome is the clear favorite. Few treatments are often enough to relieve muscular tension, alleviate pain or eliminate it entirely. The dreaded and especially painful trigger points are safely reached due to the large physical penetration depth. A short massage after the ultrasonic treatment is perfect. The result is quick pain relief with good prospects for long-term effect.

Overview of known areas of application

• influence on myofascial trigger points and muscular tensions
• acceleration of muscular regeneration after physical stress
• improvement of mobility and pain relief in cervical and lumbar pain syndrome
• pain relief in activated arthroses and chronic arthritis on hand, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints
• mobility improvement and pain relief in tendinoses, calcifications, contractures, among others
• acceleration of regeneration in soft tissue, tendon and ligament injuries
• stimulation and acceleration of bone healing
• increase in effectiveness of motional and manual-therapeutic measures
• dermato-cosmetic measures (improvement of tissue trophics, softening of keloid structures, etc.)

In simple terms low-frequency ultrasound works like a catalyst that activates and stimulates the body’s self-healing powers. Better trophics and accelerated resorption, muscular tension relief and inhibition of pain receptors are important for functional restoration and pain treatment on muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. The specific physical properties of low-frequency ultrasound lead to marked physiological effects such as increased microcirculation, higher lymphatic transport, lower plasma viscosity, accelerated metabolism.

Contra-indications

Based on the present state of knowledge the following main contraindications must be heeded:
• acute severe skin inflammations
• skin and bone tumours
• pregnancy
• tinnitus (case-dependent)
• acute phlebothrombosis
• acute bleeding
• sonication on the head
• sonication of gonads
• sonication in chest area of children

Treatment is not allowed in patients with sensation impairments in the treatment area. During treatments in the nape area, dermatomes higher than C3 must be avoided.

Application with implants

Passive implants (metals, plastics, ceramic) such as artificial joints are basically no contraindications. With active implants such as heart pacemakers, neurostimulators, insulin pumps etc., an ultrasound treatment is possible with reservations.
A conclusive decision can be made only by the attending physician or therapist in this case as well.
